CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVEs

About

One of the most effective ways you can take action on the climate crisis is by calling your representatives. Political leaders are waking up to the urgency of the climate crisis, but change is not happening quickly enough. Leaders need to hear that climate is a priority for you.

Congressional representatives count every call and they know that just one caller can represent the shared opinion of hundreds of their constituents. Your call matters!

How do I call my representative?

STEP 1: FIND OUT WHO REPRESENTS YOU AND HOW TO CONTACT THEM

Everyone has multiple federal representatives based on where you live:  two Senators and one Member of Congress.

Click here, enter your address, and click the “federal” checkbox to find out who you should call. Each phone number will be listed in the person’s contact information.

STEP 2: LEARN WHERE THEY STAND ON THE CLIMATE CRISIS

Are your reps doing all they can to protect you from a changing climate? Start by looking here to see if your reps have taken the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge (meaning that they won’t take donations from polluting fossil fuel companies whose business threatens our future), and click here and here to see if they support a Green New Deal (meaning that they prioritize legislation that will ensure a socially just transition to renewable energy). You can address these two initiatives and/or your other climate priorities in your calls.

STEP 3: PICK UP THE PHONE AND SHARE YOUR VIEWS WITH THEM!

Remember that your call matters! If they aren’t leading on climate, let them know how you feel about it...and if they are working to stop the climate crisis, you can call and thank them.

If you have your own climate story to tell, speak from the heart! For help figuring out how to start, here’s an example:

Hello, my name is (your name) and I am a constituent of yours from (your neighborhood or city).

EITHER: Thank you so much for taking the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. That gives me confidence in your decisions and leadership.

OR:  I noticed you haven’t spoken out in support of climate focused programs like  the Green New Deal, and I’m calling to urge you to do so. Without ambitious action on climate I am very worried for our future.

STEP 4: PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK AND TELL US HOW IT WENT!

Performing civic actions like calling your reps help make your community a better place. And sharing your commitment to climate action with others can help inspire them to do the same—your leadership can be contagious! Use the #CallYourRepsOnClimate and tag @climatemuseum to tell us about your calls!

You can also fill out the form below to help build a community of action! We’ll only publish your first name and last initial.

HEAR FROM OTHERS WHO’ve TAKEN ACTION

I emailed Michael T. McCaul a representative in the congress for the state of Texas. I patiently await a response and hope it goes well!
