Opening Day: An All-New Exhibition in Soho

  • Climate Museum Pop-up 105 Wooster Street New York, NY, 10012 United States (map)

An all-new Climate Museum exhibition, THE END OF FOSSIL FUEL, at 105 Wooster Street in Soho, NYC opened on Saturday, October 7. As with all of our exhibitions and programs, entry is completely free of charge and open to all.

The exhibition explores how the fossil fuel industry, whose product is causing the climate crisis, manages to keep making a killing off of killing us—and what we can do about it. It is a story that encompasses the hard truths we must confront to arrive at a vibrant, earned belief in the better future we can make together.

The show looks at how climate change and the inequalities born of colonialism and transatlantic slavery, in particular racist hierarchies, interrelate at the core of the world system we inhabit today. The fossil fuel industry arose out of this history. It drives the devastation caused by climate change through a business model that both relies upon and intensifies racist inequalities. The show also examines the industry’s longstanding, aggressive, and systematic use of deception to maintain its perceived legitimacy, and much more.

This is also a story of astonishing victories won by climate justice communities and leaders fighting for social equality and clean energy together, victories won against odds that always seem substantial at the outset. The show provides information and tools to empower all visitors to see the connections between climate change and inequality and to become strong advocates for climate justice, with built-in, interactive opportunities to join a broad community of action on the spot.

And the exhibition opens up our minds and hearts with a 45-foot mural by award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie envisioning the transition to a safe and just future. Christie’s work helps us see the world we are fighting for.
