Earth Day Celebration

  • The Climate Museum 105 Wooster Street New York, NY, 10012 United States (map)

During the final weekend of the exhibition, the Climate Museum hosted an Earth Day Celebration of creativity and community. We presented a full day of activities for all ages, and friends of the Museum could also drop in anytime to see the show. Snacks and refreshments were served, and as always, the Museum’s show and programming were free and open to everyone.

At our all-day watercoloring station, visitors took inspiration from the exhibition’s mural by R. Gregory Christie, Making Tomorrow, or painted their own vision of a climate-safe and just future. Our curatorial team, Amanda Nesci and Anais Reyes, led the activity. (We learned a lot from artist Nicole Kelner in last year’s watercoloring workshop. Thank you, Nicole! This year’s workshop was not about SolarPunk, but it still focused on envisioning a better climate future.)

Whether a novice or a seasoned poet, guests explored their climate creativity through a poetry workshop drawing on elements of the show. Middle-school-age through adult visitors participated in the activity . This workshop was led by John Linstrom, the Museum’s Mellon Fellow in Climate Humanities and Social Justice. (His poetry collection To Leave for Our Own Country has just hit the shelves—participants were in good hands!)

Speed-friending, a visitor favorite, was a hit once again! A range of kindred spirits shared their climate origin stories and met new climate-interested friends. Open to high-school-age through adult visitors, and no prior experience was necessary. Our youth and public programs team, Tricia Brown and Prisca Dognon led this activity.

The backdrop to all of these activities was the final weekend of THE END OF FOSSIL FUEL. Visitors took in the few remaining days of the space by learning more about the fossil fuel industry, the movement for climate and environmental justice, and the climate supermajority in the US.
