April 29, 2019, New York — From June through October, the Climate Museum returns to beautiful Governors Island to present an exhibition inspired by youth leadership on climate. Hosted in the Island’s Nolan Park, this exhibition invites visitors to explore interactive installations to learn about clean energy and other proven mitigation strategies, as well as the main impediments to our transition to a carbon-free economy and culture. The show celebrates the young people around the world who are telling the truth about the climate crisis and the vital role of youth in leading us toward a climate-safe future.

This new wave of leadership urges us all to make a fresh start in our approach to the crisis, and at the end of the exhibition, visitors choose from a range of commitments and actions to break the climate silence and advance climate progress.

The exhibition was highlighted by The New York Times in its recent article on climate arts.

“Youth voices cut through the accumulated weight of society’s passivity and drive home the moral imperative of immediate action,” says Climate Museum director Miranda Massie, adding “Our new exhibition is geared toward answering this call in the context of an immersive and engaging educational experience.”

“We are thrilled to have the Climate Museum back for their second year of programs in Nolan Park” says Meredith Johnson, Vice President of Arts and Culture at the Trust for Governors Island. “Engaging the public in a direct and collaborative dialogue on our climate crisis, Taking Action brings to the forefront the voices of young leaders who are transforming the climate movement through systemic behavioral shifts that are imperative for the future of this City, this planet and the many generations to come.”

“Climate change is the most important issue of today and it is my generation that has to solve it,” says Nayesha Krishna, Climate Museum Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Member and exhibition host. “I am very excited about interning in the summer at Taking Action. What I’m looking forward to the most is the photo gallery on youth leaders, because when you know that someone else is also fighting for the same cause alongside you, you gain courage and support.”

"I am deeply grateful to be affiliated with an organization like the Climate Museum that repeatedly demonstrates its commitment to raising youth voices and responding to them," says Alysa Chen, founding member of the YAC. "I can't wait to visit the show this summer!"

The exhibition will be staffed primarily by high school students. It will be open 11am-9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 11am-5pm on Thursdays and Sundays prior to the end of the public school year, with extended hours during the summer months. The Climate Museum is the first museum in the US dedicated to climate change and solutions. We mobilize the strengths of museums--such as popularity and public trust--across the arts and sciences to build civic and cultural engagement with the climate crisis. We programmed intensively across New York City in 2018, our first public-facing year, including the presentation of a ten-site citywide public art exhibition by Justin Brice Guariglia in partnership with the Mayor’s Office - Climate Policy and Programs. 2018 exhibitions were covered in The New York Times, The New Yorker, the Washington Post, and The Atlantic.
