Matt Dapolito, CPA

Matt Dapolito (he/him) has extensive experience in every aspect of nonprofit accounting, auditing, and taxation issues for exempt organizations. In addition, he is highly knowledgeable about the design of internal and financial reporting controls and regularly advises nonprofits on board governance and federal funding guidelines and regulations. He has conducted numerous audits in accordance with OMB Circular A133 and has assisted his clients in developing systems to account for and comply with federal funding requirements properly. He also has experience with financing mechanisms for community development, such as tax-exempt bonds and new market tax credits.

Before founding NonProfit Fiscal Management, LLC in July 2011, Dapolito was a partner at an accounting firm specializing in providing audit, tax, and business advisory services exclusively to not-for-profit organizations. While in that role, he developed a financial services outsourcing model designed to address many of the common challenges and opportunities that small and medium-sized nonprofits typically face. This pioneering and cost-effective approach enables organizations to leverage their limited accounting department budgets to implement the same sophisticated financial systems utilized by organizations many times their size. With access to CFO-level expertise, these nonprofits and their boards enjoy a level of strategic service and support that would otherwise be beyond their reach.

Dapolito established NPFM to make this unique financial services delivery model, which he has provided to a growing number of organizations in the United States for over 20 years. Some of his company’s current clients include New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Advocates for Children of New York, and Make the Road New York, all of which he has been servicing for more than 15 years. Due to advances in technology, NPFM now serves all its clients in a virtual and paperless environment and has expanded its reach outside of New York.

Dapolito also shares his nonprofit expertise with his local community. He is currently serving as Treasurer of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and he served on the board of directors of United Way of Long Island for over ten years when he resided on Long Island. In this capacity, he was instrumental in implementing safeguards to ensure that contributors’ donations were awarded only to financially sound and viable partner agencies. Dapolito is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
