Introduction

THE END OF FOSSIL FUEL

Heat. Fires. Storms. Floods. Smoke. In the United States, the summer of 2023 was a summer of reckoning.

FOSSIL FUEL POLLUTION DRIVES THE CLIMATE CRISIS. Greenhouse gases emitted by burning fossil fuels form a blanket that traps heat in Earth's atmosphere, causing the impacts-the mayhem-around us.

Climate mayhem and devastation here and around the world were not preordained: for years, we have had the capacity to transition to clean, renewable energy.

So why is there more fossil fuel pollution every year? Why is there no direct government action to phase out fossil fuels? Why, in 2022, a year of record-smashing profits, did the industry receive $7 trillion in subsidies-$13 million in public funds per minute?

The answer starts with inequality.

The fossil fuel economy relies on racism and geopolitical domination to push its worst impacts away from places and people where social power is concentrated and toward vulnerable communities. The history of fossil fuels started with injustice. That interdependence persists today.

Examining the industry's exploitation of inequities to preserve its own power and its other methods of profiting off destruction is a key step toward terminating its reign. Equipped with this knowledge, we can end the use of fossil fuels and build a better world.

Much work is already being done to accomplish exactly that. By the end of this show, you will find cause both to believe in the bright future we can make for and with each other, and to join together in that fight with conviction and resolve.

THIS EXHIBITION EXPLORES HOW THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY, WHOSE PRODUCT IS CAUSING THE CLIMATE CRISIS, HAS MAINTAINED THE ARRANGEMENT OF MAKING A KILLING OFF OF KILLING US—UNTIL NOW.
